Four Simple Tips For Sustainable Fashion
We are all hyper-conscious of our impact on the planet with our actions these days, not least our fashion choices. When we love to follow fashion, it can be difficult to shop responsibly, but with some careful planning, it is possible. Follow these simple tips for sustainable fashion.
Swap Your Clothes
A clothes swap is a fun and easy way to give your wardrobe an update. It also makes sure the clothes you don’t wear any more find a good home and a new lease on life. It’s a great way to spend an evening with friends, and local community groups or charities will often organize events to swap clothes, too.
It’s a simple concept; bring a minimum number of items that you don’t wear for whatever reason. Take some tickets at the event and go home with some clothes that are new to you. If you wish to organize a slightly bigger event, you could try to raise some money for charity at the same time and make a real night of it; invite a makeup artist, hairdresser, or even a personal stylist to support the guests with their choices. You might even get a local boutique to sponsor the event or find a coffee shop that could provide some catering. A photographer could add the final confidence-boosting element!
Give Fast Fashion A Miss
This is a tough one. We all love to see the new season’s styles and treat ourselves to something that is in fashion. Our social media feeds are full of the latest trends and we see all the fashion influencers wearing the season’s must-haves.
Of course, most people do end up wearing things more than once - even the most high-profile celebrities are snapped wearing the same outfit on different occasions! And remember, there’s nothing wrong with that. Reusing is every bit as important as reducing and recycling, and when it comes to clothing, it’s the easiest option.
The problem comes when these high-fashion items are no longer in fashion in just a few short months. We spend money on them, wear them just a handful of times, and then they live at the back of the closet before we ditch them. Side-step the trap of this fast fashion and your style becomes instantly more sustainable. You save some cash, too!
Skipping fast fashion doesn’t mean you don’t buy new at all; it means being smarter about the things you need. Look for gaps in your closet and buy quality garments that will last longer than the next few months. Buy products that are made to last.
There is a lot to be said for buying quality over quantity. A lot of the environmental responsibility comes from the manufacturing process. How the materials are grown and produced is every bit as important. If we knew that our clothes were produced in a sweatshop, we might think twice about parting with our cash.
Sustainability is important to us, and our range includes items made from organic cotton or recycled materials. We also use environmentally friendly dyes for lots of our fabrics; you can read more about it here.
Create A Capsule Wardrobe
Buying high-quality classics over fast fashion and looking for the gaps in your clothing choices is a great way to be more sustainable with what you wear. Picking pieces that all work together allows you to choose a few key items that mix and match to create lots of different outfits. With a closet of interchangeable items, you’ll always have something gorgeous to wear, whatever the season or occasion. Check out our New York Collection for some great pieces, including these Broadway Black Organic Cotton Long Shorts, to start your capsule collection in classic monochrome shades.
Classic cuts and neutral colors are the best place to start, and you can always accessorize to bring a sense of the current trend to your outfit. Don’t try to create the capsule all at once. Instead, you can build it over time.
Consider donating your old clothes to a charity so they can sell them and raise money for their cause. Each of us has a cause that is close to our heart, whether it’s an animal charity or a health charity like cancer research or a heart foundation. Choose a charity you care about and you could raise money for them and get someone a bargain in the process.
By following these simple tips for sustainable fashion, you can make more environmentally responsible choices when it comes to what you wear.
